Focus:

Teacher Credibility/Trust

Teacher Credibility is defined as the idea that teachers need to be seen as believable, convincing, and capable of persuading students that they can be successful.  when students believe that they can learn from their teachers the effect size on their learning is 1.09 (the potential of increasing the rate of learning by over a year!).  Teachers and students that have a healthy growth-producing relationships have a higher credibility with students, so once again establishing strong relationships is important.

There are four specific actions a teacher can take to establish teacher credibility: trust, competence, dynamism and immediacy. As with many other things it all begins with trust...

Here are some things to remember when it comes to establishing trust with your students:
1.  Students need to know that you can about them as individuals.
2.  Students need to know that you are honest and reliable.

To increase the speed in which you establish trust with your students think about the following recommendations:
  • Benevolence:  Having confidence that one's well-being and that something you care about will be protected by others increases trust.  The assurance that other's won't exploit your vulnerability or take advantage of your  mistakes helps make us feel safe and establish trust.
    • Don't spend all your time trying to catch students in the wrong
    • Be honest about the impact a student's behavior has on you as an individual
  • Honesty:   Your character, integrity and authenticity matter to your students.
    • If you make a promise, work to keep it
    • Tell students the truth about their performance (they know when they have not done their best)
  • Openness:  The extent in which you share information with your students creates reciprocal trust.
    • The lack of physical proximity and the fact that we might be in each other's homes might invite questions that would not have been asked at school.  Answer honestly when you can and being clear about the reason when there are questions you cannot answer.
  • Reliability:  Consistency of behavior and knowing what to expect makes students feel safe and confident.  The increases the rate in which they build a trusting relationship with you.
    • Be on time for Meets, follow through on feedback with your students to show reliability.
  • Competency:  The ability to perform as expected and according to established expectations.

Focus:

Touchpoints:
Touchpoints with students include the interactions we have with students, but also extend to your google classroom, the contacts you make with families, and the directions you provide for asynchronous learning.
You have all developed tools and systems  so  you can monitor the number and quality of interactions or "touchpoints" with each student and their families.  Because our distance learning schedule has a fewer number of hours "face to face" with students,  the amount of direct instruction is maximized, meaning that opportunities for casual, short interaction opportunities have decreased.
Here are some approaches to maximize ways to build and maintain relationships across the school year:
1.  Have a system for calling on students and noticing who hasn't participated.
  • Consider a system for for randomly calling on students.  This decreases the likelihood that some students will be over looked.
  • Remember the goal is not to put the student on the spot, but to raise the amount of discourse with the class.
2.  Make sure every live session includes whole group and small group discussions.
  • Every opportunity for discussion includes opportunity to use  your students names, ask critical thinking questions and demonstrate  your care for them.
3.  When you use discussion boards like "Jam Board" or "Padlet" actively participate in the discussion.
  • Let the student's know you read and appreciate their participation.
  • Track participation of your students on the discussion board
4.  Use opportunity for "Popping-Up" in your class even when you are not in front of them.
  • Add your student's to Dojo or Remind so you can send messages of motivation and encouragement OR ask them an intriguing/trivia question or riddle.
  • Post Photos of students and their assignments in your Google Classroom.
  • Feature your students on your Google Classroom (think "Student of the Week")
  • Craft a newsletter or start a blog to communicate with your students and families
  • Use Loom to personalize the directions of asynchronous work.
  • Use a voice recording tool to provide feedback on student work and effort during asynchronous time.

  4. Go out and ACT NOW!

  • Riverside County Office of Education is proud to offer a virtual book study on Zaretta Hammond’s book ‘Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain: Promoting Authentic Engagement and Rigor Among Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Students.’ Participants will have opportunities to discuss key concepts from the book and strategies for implementing culturally responsive practices. The book study is free, but participants will need
to purchase their own book. Flyer | Registration (Deadline:10/27/20)

  • Here is an article from Edutopia regarding the importance of bringing out those diverse books in your classroom libraries and sharing them with your students:
"Don’t wait until you are back in the classroom to pull out all of your diverse books. We are charged with the task of creating a community that fosters social and emotional well-being in all of our students; that task has not been put on hold just because we are not physically together. Use the time you have now to get started. Morning meetings are a great place to embed mini lessons that support social and emotional growth. Consider choosing a diverse text each week and building a discussion around it. Every discussion does not have to be long and drawn out. But each one should be intentional and inclusive."

Compassion Fatigue:
The Distance Learning Playbook defines Compassion Fatigue as a combination of physical, emotional and spiritual depletion associated with the work we do with others.  Most of the time teachers feel "compassion satisfaction" with the work we do with our students and families.  Teachers feel effective when they see evidence in the work they are doing with their students in their learning and maturation throughout the school year.

Compassion fatigue is the opposite of compassion satisfaction and is the "high cost of caring".  When helping people in distress there is an extreme state of tension and preoccupation with the suffering of those being helped to the degree that it can create a secondary traumatic stress for the helper.   This can lead to a lowered tolerance for frustration, an aversion to working with difficult students and decreased job satisfaction.

Signs of compassion fatigue include:
  • Isolation
  • Emotional Outbursts
  • Sadness, Apathy
  • Impulse to rescue anyone in need
  • Physical ailments
  • Substance abuse
  • Hypervigilance or hyperarousal
  • Recurring nightmares or flashbacks
  • Excessive complaints and negativity about colleagues, management or students.
Our commitment to your wellness is a serious one.  We recognize the intense and stressful environment you find yourselves working in and want to ensure you have the knowledge and resources to find some peace of mind during your day.  Reach out if you want more information regarding resources available to you to support your mental and physical wellness.
