Great Things We Noticed: 

  • Ms. Wilbur's class working in the garden! 
  • Hawthorne being asked to present at the National Personalized Learning Conference in Austin Texas about WIN Time in K-2! Thank you to Hillery, Kim and Beth for joining in on the fun! 
  • Pre-writing organizers in Mr. Comeaux's room!
  • A VIP table and a special goodbye in Ms. Tilton's room! 
  • 4th grade focusing on Point of View because that's what their students need!

Nuts and Bolts: 

  • All report card due for review Monday, 2/24
  • SST referral deadline is FRIDAY, 2/28 
  • If a student has earned "1's" in multiple areas - fill out and submit an SST referral BY FRIDAY
  • Please take a moment to review behavior expectations with your students during lunch and recess - Longi and I will be out all day Thursday and Friday - send only emergencies and major discipline to the office 
  • March 10th Grade Level Data Meetings: 
    • Each grade level will be meeting with Janet Sewell and Laura Ferreia  for 1 hour each
      • Analysis of  ELA data and get support in Wonders, ELA standards, use of IAB's etc. 
      • Analysis of Math data and get support with Eureka. Math standards, use of IAB, etc.
    • A schedule will be coming out by the end of the week
  • Team Meeting scheduled for Wednesday has been cancelled. 
  • Instruction: March 2nd-6th will be Census Instruction Week. Help get the word out about the importance of the Census through education. Teachers can find relevant and useful lessons that access all content areas and every grade level at the U.S. Census Bureau’s Statistics in Schools website.
  • Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit March 25-29, 2020
    • Longtime Riversider Shirley Coates and her organization The Society of Extraordinary Women, will be hosting the Tuskegee Airmen Exhibit March 25th through the 29th. The exhibit will be available for viewing in the Riverside Convention Center March 26-27, 2020, and will move to March Air Force Base March 28 - 29, 2020 to be featured in the 2020 Air Show. Ms. Coates and The Society of Extraordinary Women would like Riverside to experience the exhibit and learn more about the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen as well as meet General Charles McGee, one of the original Tuskegee Airmen (click HERE for article).

  • Please be thoughtful about your laminating choices.  Each roll of laminating costs $35.29 and we have used more than 10 roles of film already this year. 
  • Freedom: A Black History Celebration: CALLING ALL STUDENT PERFORMERS! **Please share with your students!**
    • Students from across the district are invited to participate in a performance at Ramona High School on Fri. Feb. 28 at 6:30pm. RUSD Dancers, singers, and instrumentalists from elementary to high school are encouraged!

  • Freedom: A Black History Celebration
    • Please come out to support and attend “Freedom: A Black History Celebration” at Ramona High School Theater on 2/28 @ 6:30pm. Please encourage your parents, students, teachers and staff to attend! More info.
  • Arts Partners Newsletter: February 2020

  • Black History Celebration Art and Essay Contest Theme: “Black History is American History” The art contest is open to all RUSD students in grades K-3. The essay contest and art contest are open to all RUSD students in grades 4-12.
    • Grades K-3: create an art display
    • Grades 4-6: write an essay 100 - 250 words or create an art display
    • Grades 7-8: write an essay 250 - 500 words or create an art display
    • Grades 9-12: write an essay 500 – 1,000 words or create an art display
    • One winner per category per level. Each winner will be invited to present their art or read their essay at the AAPAC meeting on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at 6pm - 7:30pm at Sierra Middle School where they will receive their prize. Click here for more information.

Getting Ready for Testing
  • Take a look at the Accessibility Tools - this may help some of your students be more successful during testing.
  • Take advantage of the IAB's.  
    • Use an IAB that is not required and allow students to partner up to become more familiar with the tools and what the test looks like.
    • Use the IAB as a pretest or a post test.  
PBIS
  • Character Counts Slide Show - the team has made one of these for each month.  This month we are focusing on Fairness.  If you haven't seen the slide shows already, please take a look.  There are read alouds linked, quotes, and activities.
  • Character Count Slips - Each month there is a different color character count slip.  Please hand out to students for showing that particular character count trait.  Students will be recognized during morning announcements and during lunch at the end of the month.  Slips can be found next to the teacher boxes!

  • I wanted to offer an opportunity to you to take a summer class designed by Katie Novak.  Dr. Novak is a well respected expert on MTSS and Universal Design for Learning.  Universal Design for learning has three guiding principles for designing standards based instruction instruction: 
    • 1.  Provide Multiple Means of Representation
    • 2.  Provide Multiple Means of Action and Expression
    • 3.  Provide Multiple Means of Engagement

    • The course you are taking is an online module and will take  8 weeks to complete. 
    • The class runs from 4/27- 6/21.  
    • I am offering to pay for the class in full and if you are interested, to pay for the college credits as well (equating to 3 graduate level hours).

  • Ada Barreto's memorial service will be held on February 22nd with time from 11-2 to share condolences and memories with the family.  The service will be held at Arlington Morturary  -9645 Magnolia Ave. 
  • Our next set of data meetings will be grade level team meetings - dates and details coming soon 
  • Census 2020 - This year the census is EXTRA important for California and our schools - there is a legitimate fear of an under count and loss of representation in Washington.  We will be doing all we can to help our community participate in the census and need you to plan instruction with your students...

  • Eureka Year 2 PD Information:
    • Teachers must sign up on Sched for an available date. Use this page to view available dates.
    • If a teacher is on a waitlist, please have them sign up for an alternate date in case their first option does not become available. 
    • We have a set number of subs available for each date and the rooms where the PD is going to be held cannot comfortably hold more than the number of spaces available.
    • This training is mandatory for all elementary teachers, even those who are not currently teaching math.
    • Combo teachers (including SDC teachers) should only sign up to attend one day, not one day for each grade level.
    • The budget number for these PD sessions is 03-630-0116-9-1110-1009-1130.
    • All sessions will begin at 8:15am and end at 3:30pm.
    • Here is a list of the upcoming sessions:

  • At this time we have not heard the details of Ada's memorial services.  We will get this information out to you as soon as possible.  We have decided to add a butterfly to our mosaic in Ada's honor and 4th grade is donating books to the library in her honor as well.
