Nuts and Bolts:

  • Here is the link for "Your Power Hour" lesson plans.  They can also be found atbit.ly/HawksPL
  • Monica sent out great information about "Online Challenges" that you may or may not have heard of from your students.... It is always a challenge to find the balance between raising a level of awareness and inflaming the interest of our students.  This is a great example of why monitoring the use of the computers by our students is extremely important – active supervision during any time when students are using devices is the first and most important deterrent.  If your students are talking about it during class time, redirect them and reinforce that topics like this challenge are not appropriate for school.
    • Here are some tips listed in the article to pass on to any parents that might call:
      • Talk about it. Though we can't always be with our tweens and teens to prevent dangerous behavior, our words really can stay with them. Say, "If you ever want to do an internet challenge, check with me first."
      • Get them to think. Help your kid think through the challenges and whether they're safe or have potential risks. Say, "Walk through each step and figure out where things could go wrong."
      • Acknowledge peer pressure. Today's kids think of internet personalities as their peers, so seeing kids on YouTube doing a challenge could influence your kid. Say, "Why do you want to do this? Is this a video of yourself that you really want out in the world?"
      • Stay (somewhat) up to date. Ask your kid about what's happening in their lives when they're not distracted -- even when it seems like they don't want you to. Sometimes kids are more willing to talk about what's going on with other kids than with themselves, so pose questions about friends, school, and trends. Once the conversation is open, you can get a sense of what your kid thinks about the latest craze -- and if they're safe. Keep an open mind and intervene if you're concerned. Say, "Would you consider doing a viral stunt if someone asked you? Which ones would you do and not do?"
      • Model responsible online habits. Some parents are the ones recording their kids taking these challenges, so make sure your involvement sends the message you intend. Today it might be harmless, but tomorrow it might be more dangerous. Help your kids make the distinction so they can stay safe. Say, "Let's do a funny challenge together, but we'll only film it if you want to, and we'll only share it with family."

  • A student in Mr.  Hara's class, Brandon Arellano, is currently in the hospital battling Leukemia.  We are collecting items for a care basket for both Brandon and his Mom.  Brandon really likes Sonic the Hedgehog, please drop off items in the box sitting in the staff room -
  • Shannon Dadlez created a class on the PD hub for the Summer Science Institute. If you’re interested you can sign up there. We already have 4 staff members who want to sign up so you will have great company if you sign up as well.
  • Please complete the HOMEWORK SURVEY: https://bit.ly/2N7sCpf
  • SST/SBIT Meetings will be held 3/13 - The schedule is currently full, but we will be holding SBIT and SST meetings on Tuesday mornings going forward.  Please reach out to Beth or Sarah if you have a referral or question.
  • New NGSS User Training: Elementary teachers who are new to using NGSS materials (i.e. FOSS), are invited to attend a training on Monday, March 11 from 3:30-5:30 p.m. at Earhart B4.  Coaching will be provided and time will be compensated.  Teachers need to sign up on the PD Hub.  For more information, please contact Shannon Dadlez (sdadlez@rusd.k12.ca.us)
  • FRIDAY, 3/15 is our next 100% attendance day!  Students attending school on Friday will get entered into a raffle to crack an egg on Ms. Brown and Ms. Summers's heads! Classes with 100% attendance will be recognized with a special treat!  Please HYPE THIS UP - We want to break our previous attendance record!!
