Week 22

Great Things I Noticed:

  • Art Floats!  Thank you to the 4-6 grade classrooms!  The students were well behaved and we got rave reviews by the Art Float peeps... Take some time to thank a PTA helper if you see them this week!
  • Beth and the marathon SST Day!  Thank you for all of your hard work!
  • Judid and Jump Rope for Heart!  Let's exceed our goal this year!
  • Kristi and the great PL Video!  Thank you for taking the time to highlight the great work at our school!
  • The team that attended the PL day!  We came away with LOTS of great ideas!
  • Everyone who particpated by making cards, attending and sending good wishes to Ellen on her retirement.  I know she felt love and enjoyed all of the sentiments!

Nuts and Bolts:

  • Doree Montgomery has been named to the Math Textbook adoption committee.  Once I meet with Doree we will share out the time line and process for this FAST adoption.
  • Shared Leadership Team will meet tomorrow at Bournes Technology Center.  Meeting starts at 8:00.
  • Carol is Admin Designee tomorrow
  • Data meetings are Tuesday and Wednesday - find the schedule here.  Please bring DIBELS and MAP data along with any other data points that will help inform the conversation.  We are looking at the progress of your students and look forward to seeing their growth!
  • Our 100th day of school is FRIDAY!  Let's get the students excited about this!  We are striving for 100% attendance, kids dressing up like the are 100 and a celebration of 100 days of school!

  • Recently, I asked you to plese walk your students to the gate at the end of the school day.  Thank you to the teachers that do this on a consistent basis!  I am asking again to walk your students to the gate and watch for a few minutes while they disperse and find their people.  Frequently, Clarissa and I are in IEP's at the end of the day and are not out in front to monitor.  We need your help in this.
    • Walk with your class to the gate
    • Stay for a few minutes to watch as they leave or find their people
    • Discuss with your class the expectation that being safe, respectful and responsible extends to the time after the bell rings.

Focus:

On Friday I was able to visit some classrooms at Pachappa and Taft.  I always come away inspired with a new idea when I visit classrooms (at Hathorne or other schools!).  I notice a 5th grade teacher using a gradual relaease of responsiblity method with writing.  The first piece of writing they did as a whole class (Mum Bett), the second piece of writing the did in groups of four (Frederick Douglass), the third piece of writing (Harriet Tubman) they worked with a partner and the final draft, they did as individuals (Rosa Parks).  We observed them working on the Rosa Parks piece and the students were confident and engaged in the discussion and ready to write!  I have attached some pictures from the classroom below.

A few other items to notice:
  • This teacher used a blended classroom model to support knowledge of content (like many of you do).
  • This teacher combined resources in Wonders with primary source material and her own instructional materials to create units of study that support the standards.
  • Students used a house analogy to structure their writing (I have included a template below).
