Thankful and Grateful: 

This is the time of year in which we express our gratitude to those that we are thankful for.  Longi and I wanted to express our deepest gratitude to YOU, the teachers and staff of Hawthorne Elementary.  We are grateful for your hard work and dedication, for your patience and grace and for your commitment to our community.  When we say "thank you" it is really our way of saying that we see you, we see how hard you work and we are here to support you.   Thank you!  We wish you all a safe and restful Thanksgiving Break... YOU HAVE EARNED IT!  Enjoy your family and friends, enjoy your time off, fill your days with lots of fun stuff or nothing at all, just don't forget to practice self-care and reflection.

• Mystery Science Training Opportunity:  
• Looking to bring MORE science into your school site? RUSD Science offers a 1 hour training that allows teachers to experience Mystery Science as their students would, discusses the key instructional shifts of NGSS, and explains the benefits of Mystery Science, one of which includes the fact that the time commitment can be as little as one mystery (1 hour) per week, or can extend much longer, if needed. In our presentation, we make sure to connect to the RUSD's Guide for Instructional Direction and discuss how you can use science to incorporate reading informational text and writing. Finally, we would provide materials for a year for your TK-5th grade classrooms! You read correctly; we will bring materials for your teachers so they can bring science into their classrooms the very next day! • Girls Who Code Club Mini-Grants - LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO START A CLUB AT HAWTHORNE - Longi and I will help you we just can't do it ourselves! 
• Girls Who Code Clubs are FREE programs for girls to join a sisterhood of supportive peers and role models and use computer science to change the world. When you start a Club, Girls Who Code provides free and flexible curriculum, resources, and a mini-grant of $300 if you have 3+ students enrolled in your Club. All you need is space to host the Club, computers and internet, and an adult who is 18+ to help facilitate the Club. Many Facilitators have NO technical experience and learn to code alongside their Club members.
• When you are ready to start your Club, create an account on Girls Who Code HQ to fill out your Clubs application and indicate your affiliation with Riverside Unified School District to get access to partnership benefits, like additional support and funding opportunities. APPLY TO START A CLUB HERE

• During the month of November, Hawthorne is participating in a reading challenge sponsored by The Auto Club Speedway.  Lefty’s reading challenge is a free literacy program designed to give elementary schools the opportunity to win money for their school libraries, as well as school-wide pizza parties and free NASCAR race tickets for students, staff, and parents.  Look for Reading Logs in your boxes this week.  Completed logs can be turned in at the end of the month to Mrs. Glasheen. 
• How does Lefty's Reading Challenge work?
• Students are challenged to complete 20 reading books or assignments
• Teachers set the reading goals based on student’s academic level
• Students that complete the provided Reading Log will earn a ticket for their parent/guardian to the NASCAR races on Friday, February 28, 2020 and Saturday, February 29, 2020
• Students that complete the Registration Form receive a FREE membership to Lefty’s Kids Club
• Membership to Lefty’s Kids Club gives FREE admission to the NASCAR races on Friday, February 28, 2020 and Saturday, February 29, 2020
• Schools can win money for their libraries
• Teachers with 100% class completion receive (2) tickets to the Saturday NASCAR race in 2020

• 5th Grade CPR Training RUSD is pleased to partner again with Dr. Biswas from Riverside Community Hospital and Professor at UCR to offer 5th graders hands-only CPR training.  
• Trainings will begin after Winter Break and will occur every Thursday and start at 1:30 pm.  We highly encourage all of our sites to sign up for this fantastic opportunity for our students. 
• Below are details related to the training as well as a link to the sign up sheet. 
• Training would need to occur in the MPR or other large space to practice CPR
• Equipment Needed: Projector and Microphone (if available) 
• Time Required: 1 hour and will include o Introduction - 5 min  
• Video - 10 min  
• Discussion - 10 min  
• Small group rotations - 35 min

• Fall STEM Day: 
• We will be having a day of fall centered science, art, ELA, Math, etc.  
• Your grade level team can choose to do activities on Thursday or Friday - Please be aware we will have 11 subs on Thursday due to Instructional Design Day with Innovate Ed. 
• If you choose Halloween - plan with your grade level team how to make Halloween an inclusive, fun and enriching day. Focus on FALL THEMED ACTIVITIES!  
• We will follow our regular schedule (how can you incorporate our theme into WIN time) have a Fall/Pumpkin STEAM Day... Let us know if you have any questions!

• Writing PD for all elementary teachers begins on Monday, October 28. The dates and other information can be found here: ELA PD 
• We have put some pieces in place to support staff in an effort to decrease the amount of emails they receive. If they have questions, please have them refer back to these. We are constantly updating as new information or needs arise.

• Festival of Lights Coloring Contest
• Please encourage students to enter to compete in the Festival of Lights Coloring Contest. Contest winners will receive some holiday goodies and the students and their parents will be invited to sit in the VIP pit for the Switch-On Ceremony (they will have the best seats in the house to see the fireworks)! Submissions due Nov. 11 by 4pm. More info.
